Help!! I have installed Veritas Backup exec 10.0 on a freshly reinstalled Win 2k SBS and now attempting to recover from tape. No issue with Running Iventory on any of the tapes, but "Catalog" seem to hang on all tapes, for as much as 45 hours in one case. There was no error message, "% complete" remained blank and byte count remain at 0 the whole time while the Compaq Proliant ML310 server's CPU stayed pegged at 100%.
I was able to over-write one of the tapes by creating a new backup and later restoring the files to confirm that the tape drive and software are properly installed and configured. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Stumped..

Make sure you're choosing to catalog a tape that is in the drive, verses one youre finding from All Media. Start the catalog from within Devices, after inventory.

Typical stuff:

- retension media if Travan, DLT, LTO
- Ensure SCSI card youre using is non-RAID, or has HostRAID disabled.
- Try toggling write-protect on the tape. *with caution* if critical data.
- Start the removable storage service (ntmssvc), or stop if it is started
- Update SCSI driver (and firmware if PCI card)
- Check drivers for TBU. If Provider is Veritas, install latest DDI from their site. If that doesnt work get the latest from the mfg of the tbu (ie, Certance) and uninstall all Veritas drivers by running tapeinst.exe
- Stop BE services and test the drive (using a diff tape) using a tape diag like taperx.exe , or test-backup with NTBACKUP, but most have removable storage started, and non-veritas driver loaded for that to work.

if its as 100% cpu then the backup exec database and or catalogs folder is corrupt. Make sure you have all the patches and on Build 5520. Rename the catalog folder. An reload the database from base - there are technotes on getting a fresh database.
