We’ve been running Veritas Backup Exec v8.6 on our server for about 6 years. The OS is Server 2000. Lately, when I try to open the activity monitor to check our backup status, I get a dialog box asking for a username and password. We’ve never set up a password! How do I solve this problem?

I take it you need an admin password for the server itself, have you tried that?

Hi Roland,
We have an Administrator password we use to log into the OS, ie Windows Server 2000. I tried that with no luck. It's never asked for a password in 6 years! I can't figure out why it's doing this!

Then it's time to go from technician to...magician.

Once your options run out with knonw username & pw, time to begin the guessing game - you'll get frustrated I assure you.

admin and no password, administrator and no password, admin and admin, administrator and administrator, etc...

Have you contacted Symantec about this? They may have a solution...

Event log.
Check services for BE. What logon does it specify? Check that account in AD - is it locked out? If so, unlock it. If not, set all BE services to local system account and stop all BE services and restart. That'll get round the uname and password problem.

Or check your system documentation which will detail everything you need to know. Ah...
