I've tried and tried, pulled my hair out and tried again to get a clean trace of this image! Can anyone help?

Not nearly enough there to trace. You have NO resolution, it's a tiny picture, what do you expect?
You are better off using the pen tool and re-drawing it that way. It will take longer (depending on your proficiency with the pen tool) but it will only take half as long as you think because you can draw half and mirror it...

hey, thanks alot... ofcourse i had my hopes up, but i do thank you for affirming for me that there is no 'easy' solution...
will try the pen tool method.
i wonder if a tool will ever come out that, like 3d renderers, do some kinda 'render' pixel for pixel from raster to vector... that would be sweet! Maybe even some kinda algorithym thingy
