I have recently taken over support for an IP 500v2, they have a unit down the road and wanted ip handsets there. I have installed a VCM 32 card and have 8 additional channels on order and have installed 6 x 1608 handsets.

I have setup a VPN to the main site and can connect phones and make calls etc, the problem i have is i can only use 4 phones at a time the other 2 phones say bad router. If i unplug two working phones then the ones that had a fault now work, i know the VCM 32 module has 4 channels as a default but is this limiting me using all 6 phones as i thought that the VCM channels were just to establish a connection and was then freed up once a call was in progress.

it shouldnt be the VCM, like you said, they are only used for a call.

are the phones statically address or are they getting their address from DHCP? What version? What router?

I thought on a 500V2 the VCM32 contains all 32, no additional licenses necessary. Do you have enough IP Endpoint licenses? What does system status indicate?

A VCM 32 on an IP500V2 gives you ALL 32 channels right off the bat, so you shouldn't have had to order additional VCM channels. Also the CVM 32 also comes with 12 IP end points. Do you have IP Phones at the main site? As Gelexa suggested you made need to check to see if you have enough IP End point licenses.

My guess is its a network problem. Have you tried taking the phones back to the main site and seeing if you can get all 6 to come up at the same time? If you can, your problem is on the VPN connection somewhere.

What routers are you using to setup the VPN connection?

Hi all,

I have been back to the site yesterday and now all of a sudden all 6 phones have started working again.

I thought that the VCM 32 only comes with 4 channels and that you are required to purchase additional VCM channels ??

The fact it's working now suggests a network issue of some sort as suspected

VCM32's now come full and IP endpoints are licenced instead, this changed back at R6 :)

Ok thanks,

They have 12 ip endpoint licenses so they should be ok now thanks.

So if i have more than 12 IP handsets i will need more endpoint licenses then

Yes, unfortunatley Avaya realised there was much more money to be made licencing endpoints insted.
The difference between the old licencing and the new on a large IP installation is quite large and upgrading costs because of this stops many people upgrading to the latest and greatest :)
