I am working on making a front end program for a database. The backend I am using Access for the ease of going in and manipulating the data. However, the people entering the data will only be using the front end. I have a copy of VB5 and am wondering will it be OK to use VB5 to write the program. Will it have any issues in the foreseeable future?

I am only familiar with VB programing. So other programing software in not an option (at this time).

Long time since I used VB5 but your objective seems easily within its capabilities ... at least from what I remember of VB5.

The only "issue" that I can think of is that both VB5 and VB6 are dead languages as far as Microsoft is concerned.

There is no obvious migration path short of redevelopment if someone wants to expand the program's capabilities into areas that VB5 can't support.

>VB6 are dead languages

Most of VB6 has about another 10 years of support to go ...

Yeah, I thought that would get a rise out of someone.

They are supported but enhancements (with the possible exception of patches for security reasons) are, in my understanding, not going to happen.

People have gotten VB5 programs running under Vista and Windows 7 but this isn't recommended. I'm not so sure the old VB5 database related components will work though.

It is working so far in what I am trying to do.

Would it be possible to write the program in vb5 then upgrade the program in another version without alot of reworking?

To VB6 ... Yes.

Beyond that, as I said before, no migration path short of redevelopment.
