I'm experimenting with the trial version of v9 and want to setup a backup to a folder on a hard drive. I've ran device config and set everything up and when lookin under device my drive is setup under group 2, however when I run through the backup wizard I am told that the group 2 device is an unrecognised device media and I can't do anything with it.

Am i missing something obvious??

Cheers

hi,
you should better use the copy utility of arcserve, you don't have to declare any device (i think arcserver don't recognize an hard drive as a device...)
cheers

HI,

If im not mistaken, you are using the backup wizard right??

try the manager instead..there were some issue whem using the wizard...

cheers
speshalyst So it Shall be Written!
So it Shall be Done!!

same problem, media in group 2 shows as unrecognized and when the job tries to run I receive error:

PLease mount any media.
(Note: media pool media can not be used by a non-media pool custom job.)

indeed. discovered copy option and it allows me to do exactly what I want including copying open files

Thanks

I've been able to configure the File System Device option successfully and am currently backing up to disk without any errors. I performed the following steps:
1. Created folders on a drive that appears local to the server which is running BrightStor v.9; I was unable to get it to work using a mapped drive however. I used a logical volume of a SAN that is fiber-connected to my backup server.
2. Used the Device Configuration Wizard to define the file system devices.
3. Configured the Groups to create a File System Device group which includes all of the File System Devices
4. Created backup jobs and chose the File System Device group as the destination.

If I remember correctly, when I tried to use a mapped drive as a File System Device, it would create it, but I received errors when trying to use it as my destination; the error may have been the same one you received.

hope that helps..

thanks,

Brantley

Have you formatted the FS (File System)device? After creating the FS device using Device Configuration you must format it. FS works like a tape drive with a single tape.
