Hi there,
I am developing an Oracle Application and one of the files we want to pick up and read is on a Network drive - can we set UTL file up so it can pick the file up from the shared network drive or does UTL FILE just pick up stuff from the Unix box ??????

Thanks for your help.

If your file is accessible to the user, who runs Oracle, you may pick up this file. If you're on Windows, Oracle normally runs under System account, who has no access to the network.

I'll add to SEM's reply. I have this set up here and it works fine. Our Oracle server is a Windows 2000 PC, so we have to set up the Oracle service to login to Windows as a user who has network access (as SEM says, the default SYSTEM account has no network access). I don't know UNIX that well, but I would assume there would be some similar consideration there.

The network folder has to be shared and the account you are using for Oracle has to have access privs. on that folder.
Finally in your initxxx.ORA file, when you specify the folder(s) with the UTIL_FILE_DIR parameter, use UNC format.
