Using s-Video to TV Scart

Hi,

I have a problem setting up my son's IBM lappy to play DVDs via the s-video to TV via the scart socket.
Bought a cable that connects from s-video and audio out to scart input on TV and can get a desktop on the TV (Black and White only, though) but when playing DVDs on media player or any other player all I get is a black screen. (have tried other TVs)
Questions are:
1.Are there any other PC settings to consider ?
2. Why am I only seeing a black and white desktop ?

The Black screen on the T.V. issue, is probably due to the Copyright protection on DVD's. The Images will only display on the primary display aka the laptop's screen. If the laptop's Video Card is a Nividia. you can go into display properties and settings and asign the T.V. as the main Screen. or Screen 1. it Should solve that part of the problem.
Now for the B/W image on the T.V. it sounds to me as if the signal being sent from the PC to the t.V is different from the one beng expected. That usually happens when you plug the RCA cable into one of the composite Video sockets on the T.V. or viceversa. Check to see that you havent plugged the cable into a wrong socket.

What I had to do to get mine to work was in the property settings of the video card I had to slowdown the hardware acceleration. That was for mpg's etc. For DVD's You have to get a codec or install like WinDVD.

This was S-video to S-Video though so I am not sure if there would be a difference although the symptoms sound the same.

s-video was not developed when SCART was introduced, so older TV's dont have s-video input trough SCART. So... perhaps you can find some converter from s-video to RGB (for SCART input) or composite video and use it. Or buy a new TV

Scart (if I remember correctly) was simply a single rectangular connector instead of having separate audio and composite video RCA sockets. The signals are the same.
S video has a separate wire for the mono part of the picture and the colors painted into the mono picture so they are not compatable.
You would need a VCR or TV with a S video input to connect S video out of a card.(gives a slightly better color resolution when copying VCRs but hardly worth it for just viewing)
Your computer should also have a composite video output that you can connect to the scart input or composite video input (AV) on your TV
ALSO: Some computer cards give no video output unless you have a monitor connected BEFORE you boot up the computer.
