This might be old news for many but I just came across it:

Instead of running TEST and STATUS commands from GEDI or Emulation, run these using the Report task under the Advanced tab. It will save you from pressing Next over and over and puts the output into a file you can easily refer back to.

This hint is helpful.

thanks

I use this to backup the vector data on a weekly basis.
You can run one report with many commands:
display vector 1; display vector 2; display vector 3;...

Choose the "Export screen capture to file" option.

I will post as a FAQ.

How do you run reports and other scheduled tasks without having to close GEDI? It also says it is blocked unless I close it.

You don't. There is only one connection open from ASA so only terminal, GEDI or a report can be using the connection.

What I do is I have two connections defined to the same switch. I use on to do the mac and such and the other will run the scheduled stuff. Works well.

Thanks

Great idea Ed.

It never occurred to me to have 2 connections to the same place.

Ronster, great tip on the vector. I used to use the Export feature for my vectors. The output is pretty ugly though. Your tip works great. I was worried that it wouldnt take over 220 vectors in one shot but it works :)

Regarding multiple connections... I recall something about each connection should have it's own login but I dont remember the reason. Anyway, I created a "Reports" login and run it off a server. I also use the server instance to monitor trunks and alarms every 15 minutes so I get an email if there are trunks out or major alarms.

I also ccreate multiple connections to the same switch.

in my case it's more like 10 though. I run various commands at the same time and I schedule daily exports of stations agents hunts vdns vectors, trunks and various other listings.

I know you have a translations backup to fall back to but I prefer to be able to restore one station or 10 at a time if I make a mistake instead of having to restor an entire days translations. I save my exports to labeled folders and I keep a months worth. At the end of the month I move the latest copy to an archive folder and I delete the prior months from the folder.

I know it sounds like alot of work but trust me ... after the initial setup it takes about 5 minutes a month.

I have used these several times. On one occasion I had a co-worker accidnetally delete 1500 VDNs from the wrong S8700. He was adding them back one at a time and I was able to pull up my exports, and import those right back into CM.

I also created an VB script that records a change log. It compares the exports and dumps any changes to a log file. I get to see not only what commands we changed but what fields were changed.

I use "list history object vdn" & "list history object vector" reports to log the changes to VDN's and Vectors.

I think the simreal way is a lot more comprehensive, but I can still drill down to that level if required I suppose.

Guy i really like all the "TIPS" that you have listed. Perhaps I could start a new section in the FAQ and call it Avaya Tips and have you post them there??

Let me know what you think. It would make it easy for others to find this thread or tips later.

Yes Mikey,

A "Tips'n'Tricks" section in the FAQs would be a good idea.
