I have a Dell Win2k3 server here, and I am trying to run MS Backup with our BNCHMARK DLT1 SCSI Sequential Tape Backup Drive.

It is very strange -- I am trying to schedule the job to occur @ 10pm every weeknight -- but I am getting errors.

When I attempt to backup individual files to check to see if a job works -- the backup runs fine -- but I am getting different errors when I check the report in the morning --

This is the error I got yesterday:

Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate.

This is the path of the backup job listed in the task scheduler --
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@E:\User Profiles\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Backup.bks" /n "Backup_Server" /d "Set created 1/16/2004 at 3:49 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:n /m normal /j "Backup" /l:s /p "DLT"

I tried to research what this meant -- and I thought I found something regarding a /um parameter -- so I changed the path and added a /um--

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@E:\User Profiles\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Backup.bks" /n "Backup_Server" /d "Set created 1/16/2004 at 3:49 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:n /m normal /j /um "Backup" /l:s /p "DLT"

And then this morning I received this error:

Invalid command line parameter '/J'.
Usage: Specify a job name for command line switch /j.

I cant find much documentation on this either -- Please Help!

I would also like the answer to this question. I spent hours trying to make SBS 2003 do scheduled backups. It gives a similar error about wrong media. It might just be that I need a training course on backup concepts in 2003.

Well, one problem is that, according to your command above, you inserted the /um switch between the /j switch (which stands for job name) and the name of the job, "Backup". Move the /um to the very end of the command, and see if that makes a difference.

Also see my thread, thread931-655160, about command-line backups. The /um switch may or may not work; I had no success with it, but others have.

I have the same problem on two different servers. It looks like the compression (hc:eek:n) does not work and the tape is full. I use a HP DAT24i tapedrive in a Compaq proliant server with sbs2003. I updated firmware and drivers.
There is 15Gb to backup on a 12/24Gb DDS3tape. When I change my backup selection to less data, it works.
Who can help me identify the problem?

Thanx!

I have the same problem. Getting the "Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate." in the backup log from ntbackup.exe on SBS2003. Here's the odd thing, the same scheduled job worked on 2 occassions but failed with this error on 5 other occasions. Makes me wonder if problem has something to do with the tape media label?

I found no help on Microsoft knowledgebase either.

I have not had the problem since I posted the original post --

my path was:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@E:\User Profiles\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Backup.bks" /n "Backup_Server" /d "Set created 1/16/2004 at 3:49 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:n /m normal /j "Backup" /l:s /p "DLT"

Then i added /um

to the end of it - stands for unrecognized media -- that should take care of the media label problem

good luck

We battled NTBackup for ages and finally got a working command for the scheduled events. This worked for us and should for you.

C:\WINNT\system32\NTBACKUP.EXE backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Full Daily Backup.bks" /P "DLT" /V:yes /L:s /M normal /HC:eek:n /UM

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark
