Hi everyone: We've added several extensions to our UCx, and there are a few users who would like to have push-button access to extensions as well as see the extension's status. The native buttons on the 1230 ip sets don't provide enough buttons (we use 4 of them for incoming lines). They could use the built-in receptionist console, but the person who handles most of the phone calls would like push-button access to extensions and status indicators. After doing some research, it looks like I could cascade up to 7 key expansion modules (NTYS22AA70E6) to add extra buttons. I could cascade up to two 18 key LED modules (NTYS23AA70E6). This was on BCM, however.

I see that I can add a KEM in the Nortel properties of each extension, but it looks as though I can only add one module to each phone (either a 12-key LCD or an 18-key LED). Is that correct? How do these modules connect to the phone itself? It looks like there's a little pigtail ribbon-like connector that plugs into the prongs at the bottom of the phone. The module gets its power from the PoE connection, so no extra power, right?

Thanks for the help everybody!

On the Nortel Properties page, the device type selected on the top determines what expansion modules can be enabled. If you selected the device type 1230, you have two choices under Key Expansion Modules:
- 1200 series KEM - 12 buttons
- 1200 series KEM - 18 buttons
Once you select the KEM type, a drop down with the number of modules is added. You can configure up to 7 KEMs with 12 buttons or 6 KEMs with 18 button.

To connect multiple KEMs, you daisy chain them. Each KEM has a 10 pin female connector on the left front side that is used to connect the KEM to the phone or to the previous KEM. There is also a 10 pin male connector on the right back side (the accessory expansion port) that can be used to connect the next KEM. If this accessory expansion port is covered by a rubber plug, remote the plug to expose the connector.

I know it sounds petty, but the look of the 12 button set is much better in my opinion. You don't have to worry about paper labels and the module just looks better. I've set two up on my UCx, it's a breeze, just like UCxguy described.

And yes, since the phone doesn't use a backlight display, you don't need a power adapter to run the KEM's...at least for one or two, maybe UCxguy knows for sure on a larger amount of KEM's installed.

Thanks RLSbutton - I agree with you. The 12-button units look nicer and with the LCD display, I can name the buttons right in the UCx. This will be a great fit for the main phone person's needs. Thanks again for all the help!
