Is it possible to use the persons email address to authenticate? For example, when he sets up outlook express he can enter name@domain.com instead of his AD username.

The problem I have is when I have 2 domains that want the same email. For example person1 wants info@domain1.com and person2 wants info@domain2.com.

I would normally just create a username of "info", but this cannot be done 2 times. I could simply make the username "info2" for the second domain, but in my opinion this doesn't look so good.

Anyways thanks for any help!!!

That is looking for trouble, it will be confusing in the future and mistakes will be made.
You are better off creating something like infodom1 and infodom2.

But, why have an info account at all? You can add that mailbox to those users own mailbox, then they can still read and send as info (whichever domain).

It just seems weird to tell someone that their email address is lets say bob@bobsdomain.com BUT their logon is going to be bobbobsdomain.

Usually with any ISP, you logon as your email address if your domain is hosted their.

It their no way around this?

Woops I meant "hosted there" not their lol.

Anyways.. I guess I should tell you what I am trying to do. I am wanting to host websites at our business. We already have exchange so we decided to use that. When someone sets up a domain they get xxx amount of emails.

We simply setup a new user in AD. If the user is in a certain OU they will be assigned a certain domain email. The only problem is if I create a user that already exists in another domain.

If it is possible I would rather not have different usernames and emails. It is less confusing to have them be the same.. for example info@domain2.com will logon as.. info@domain2.com not info9 or something..

Also, if the username and email address is different.. and I wanted to use an Email Gateway in front of my exchange server.. wouldn't it not work? Since most gateways use pop3 to authenticate.

Cause there is no way for the gateway to know that bob9 is associated with the email address bob@bobsdomain.com

So when you login to the gateway to check your blocked mail using the username bob9 there will be no mail there..

Would you have to buy a special exchange gateway or get this to work?

By that line alone, we can al tell you are very new to the game ;-)

Ususaly, with an ISP, you login with something weird as kG4f3Jzy56 as the real aaccount name, especially for ADSL and dialin accounts, that has nothing to do with your name or email.
What you describe sounds more like a 'hotmail' style

But, you are going to use Exchange to give email to website clients? Did you stop to think of the risks involved by provding outside access?
And all the extra CALs?

About the rest, from what I read, you have A LOT of reading to, and Exchange should not even be in the picture for your project.

Well actually I have worked for several different ISP's over the past 7-8 years. Those ips's have always used a 3rd party email program such as Imail. The place I am working for now wants to just host domains. And since they have exchange and windows 2003 from their partner program with MS I thought I would try to get that working instead of buying a $3000 3rd party email software.

As for the part about your user name usually being "kG4f3Jzy56" I would have to disagree.

When you sign up for ISP service you get to pick a username that isn't already used on the isp's domain your signing up with.. such as bob@ispname.com. Then you simply sign in with the username bob.

But lets say you want to host a domain with that isp. Normally the isp will use your personal domain email as your username. Such as bob@bobspersonaldomain.com.

I have seen this with over 5-6 different isp's.

Plus I didn't see much problem with using exchange to offer email to outside users. I am only allowing smtp and pop3 ports to come through. Exchange is meant to be an email software right?

You really need to see the big picture, Exchange is NOT meant to be an POP3 mailserver, it is a Collaboration Server.
Of course you can send email with, but it is mainly for office use.
Why would you spend any money for a webbased solution, there are so many free mailservers out there.

Administring an Exchange Server is not the same as a 'simple' mailserver such as Imail and the likes.
Think very careful about that.

For Exchange, you will need to pay a Client Access License for every single account, and if you are going to 'play' a Hotmail kind of service, that will eventually cost you an arm and a leg.

Your probbably right about exchange being more for inter office stuff.

Also, what email software do you know thats free?

I don't really like to 'recommend' any particular one.
Look on Google for "free mailserver" ,Linux based, even for Windows there are free ones, tons!
