Does anybody know if BackUp Exec can be used to back up MS Exchange 2003 and if so what needs to be backed up so in case the server goes down we can bring it back up.

You need the exchange server module to backup Exchange. Once you have purchased and installed it on your media server (where BE is installed), you should backup the mailboxes and information store. Hope this helps!

What exactly is the Exchange server module? Also could you tell me where are the mailboxes and information store located at?

Sorry, I used the wrong term - its agent not module. You will either have to purchase the Exchange agent from Veritas or one of its resellers. Once installed and you configure a backup job for the Exchange Server, you will see the selections under your Exchange server. The three you may want to select are:

Exchange mailboxes - so you can restore individual email messages for your users.

Public Folders (Self-explanatory)

Information Store (Make sure this is selected - prob most important)

Hope this helps a bit more!

You need the Exchange Agent, which is really nothing more than a serial number. Once that's installed, you can choose the Information Store (NOT THE MAILBOXES) in the normal SELECTIONS section of Backup Exec.

What is the diference from backing up the Information store or the mailboxes?

information store is the database the mailboxes are in, you really cant back it up because the way exchange treats the files, w/ the exchange agent for backup exec, it queries the exchange database for all its mailboxes and backups them.

Backing up the mailboxes is not the best way. That's known as [google]brick level backups[/google]

Backing up the IS flushes the logs, and maintains Single Instance Storage.

ntbackup is fine for Exchange backups. Bit more of a faff to get it scheduled, but it works fine.
