I'm able to use the function: application/vnd.ms-excel to open excel on a Windows 2000 machine but on an XP machine it brings up excel but displays no data. Is there a different script for XP?

Make sure you are doing a Response.Headers.Clear before you set the ContentType and any other headers. Also be sure to set the headers for the file name and any other ones you can set up before hand.
Of course, if the client turns off in-browser activation, it won't matter what version of windows they are on, it won't load the XLS in the browser.
