Using a dot in a virtual directory alias

Anyone no why there would be an issue in IIS5 with using a dot in a virtual directory alias? The site has a name like and we often just mount new apps to it as virtual dirs. The issue we are having causes something like to not work. If we rename it to we have no problems. Any ideas?
 
Have no ideas but we had server_03 and that did not work so we changed to server03 (it has something to do with the DNS settings reading the characters.....(there may some notes on this.......but i spent three days trying to figure it out).......apparently its DNS
 
A "." is used as a a delimiter so may cause problems depending on it's use.

without any testing, I would think that using it in a folder name would cause the folder name to be treated as a filename with an extension of .2
