Using a Cisco 2600 to Route between multiple VLANS on an HP 2524

Hi all, I need to know where to start if I need to route between multiple VLANS using a 2600 series and an HP 2524.

I have read alot of stuff but I don't know what model 2600 would be right for us.

We have about 14 users and they need to be VLAN'ed into 5 or 6 groups. They all have to share a win2k Domain controller. I am aware that I will need to trunk a port using the HP to the server with a 802.1q NIC.

Otherwise, where do I start with the HP and what model cisco works with the HP? I want to keep the solution cost effective so no bells and whistles I don't need.

802.1q is an industry standard and hence the cisco router will work with the HP switch. You'll need to have a fastethernet interface (100Mbps) on your router to support VLAN trunking. Any of the newer cisco 2600XM series should come with 10/100Mbps now.

On the cisco router:
1. Create sub-interfaces on the fastethernet port for each VLAN you want to trunk.
2. For each sub-interface, you'll need to assign an ip address respective to that VLAN. Enable trunking on the sub-interface by entering: > encapsulation dot1q <vlan number>

On the HP, you'll need to turn on trunk mode on the switch-port that your cisco router fastethernet port connects into.

If you have to buy a new router, i'd look at a 3550 ethernet switch.. for a little bit more money you can get much more power..

3550 is a layer 3 switch
