I thought it was 'ip name-server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' but that isn't getting the job done. The clients are all win2k and are set to 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'. Is there another command for the router or do I need to do something else to the clients?

Thanks

The ip name-server x.x.x.x is for your routers. Not for your clients. Your clients should be getting their DNS resoloution through a server. DHCP should be handing this information to your clients. Or if you have a static enviornment, then you should manually configure the DNS for your clients.

If this is a small office or your home, then you can have your router act as the DHCP server for the clients. And you can configure the DNS servers in your DHCP pool on the router. For more specific information on how to set this up you can check out:

Great! That worked perfectly. My clients now get the dns like they should.

So what function does the ip name-server serve? Do you have another one of those handy cisco links?

I have a lot of handy cisco links! Depends on what your looking for. Cisco has a great web site for finding configuration information. I'm glad that information helped.
