Usernames and logging in. UNIX v's Samba

I'm using Samba 2.2.8a on an IRIX server.

We have various login names etc., however Samba is not recognising these names. I have to allow guest log in the SAMBA share to allow the clients to mount the volume.

They appear as 'nobody'

Is there some way of 'linking' my IRIX users to SAMBA?
