Does anyone know how to move a user's profile from Documents and Settings to another folder on another partition? I know there is a registery hack, but everything I find on the web is a bit vague on the actual process.

Thanks for the help.

cderow,
why not just have them move the offending files?
what's on their desktop, my favorites, etc. these files should be moved to another drive (network backed up if they are important) and just have shortcuts in the documents & settings area.

The less user intervention, the better. This is a Citrix server that was partitioned into two segments. The drive with all of the system files is filling up, with most of the space being occupied by the user's profiles.

There isn't much on these user's desktops to really move over. The user's that did have documents on there desktop have already been moved.

Yes, this is fairly simple. You do need to edit the registry.

You can edit the default location for all future profiles, or you can edit the location of current profiles as well.

To edit the default location change the path in:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ProfilesDirectory

You will find the individual users listed by SID under the ProfileList key.

Modify the key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\UserSID\ProfileImagePath

You will need to manually move the files from their profile to the new location. If logged on as ADMIN you will not be able to move the admin profile as it is in use. If any user is a member of the local admins group, remove them prior to trying to move their profiles. Otherwise their files may be locked.

I hope you find this post helpful.

markdmac,
Thank you for your help. I will give your advice a shot and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

I noticed that when I go into the registry and go to edit the ProfileImagePath, that the path starts with %System Drive%. I know that this where I should enter my drive letter (D:), but do I need to keep these % characters?

I just want to make sure I do not corrupt my registry or any users' profiles if I delete these.

cderow,
'%' characters are for environment variables. do not keep, unless ayou define d:\ as %altsystemdrive% for the environment.
