I am using Access 2000 and implementing user-level security on my database. I created a new mdw file and joined it. I set up a super-user and gave the Admins group super-user permissions. I also removed the admin account from the Admins group and gave it a password. I severely limited what the Users group is able to do. My plan is for my users to be able to use their default mdw files and the admin login, but only have limited rights in the database. So far, everything seems to be working quite well.

Last night, I transferred the database and my mdw file to a laptop so that I could get some work done from home. When I got home, I joined my mdw file and opened the database. The database opened without asking me to login (meaning the admin account no longer had the password) and my super-user did not appear. The owner of everything appeared as "unknown" rather than the super-user name. I was unable to do any editing or modifications.

Since I was using the same database and mdw file, I expected that the same user list would appear. What am I doing wrong?

Did you copy the correct mdw file to your laptop? If you do a search on system.mdw, you will often find at least two and sometimes more. Make sure you copied the one listed through your workgroup administrator.

Yes, I copied my new mdw file to the laptop. The only difference was that I stored it in a different path on the laptop.

I'm guessing that you also used your workgroup administrator to join the new workgroup you copied to your laptop?

Yep. I joined the new mdw before opening the database.

Hi

I'm having a similar problem with Access 97. I've created a database for multiple users around the company, but I want to protect it with a login. Is there any way to make the system.mdw file available without having emailling it to all the users? i.e. is there any way of setting up the security in the database rather than in the system.mdw file?

Regards

Peter,

You could the first form be a login screen you designed that traps the login and password and gives access to forms based on that. You could also have certain forms request a password in the Open event and deny access if that password is wrong. However, both of these ideas are easier to crack than regular mdw Access security (which usually is not difficult).

I would recommend putting your mdw file on a server and sending out a shortcut to each user referencing it. I don't recommend distributing the mdw file to each user. If you add another user, you would have to redistribute again.

Does anybody have any ideas as to why my users aren't appearing on the other computer? This is beginning to become a problem for me because it limits my development to a single PC (which also has the risk of stranding me should the PC die).

I have tried creating a new user on my primary development computer and placing him in both my User and Admin groups. I then moved the new mdw and mdb files to the laptop. After joining the mdw, the only user appearing was still the Admin user, so I tried creating the new user with the same user ID. This user was only a member of the User group, not the Admin group.

What am I doing wrong?!?
