One of our users had their lastname changed. What is the best way for us to make this change and at the same time keep using her existing Exchange mailbox?
Right-click on the account ins Active Directory Users and Computers and select rename. Then get properties of the account and check/change the name on all the tab.
I also leave the users existing e-mail address and add the new one changing the default to be the new one. That way the user will still receive mail to her old name until all her contacts have been informed of the name change.
Go to Active directory, double click the user's account, go to email addresses tab, hit the New button, follow the prompts. Once youve added it, highlight the new one, then click the "set as primary" button
you don't need to create a new mailbox. Once the account is renamed it will cary on using the old mailbox. You justr change her default e-mail address on the corresponding e-mail tab on her user account.
Thanks for all your help so far. What about emails sent to her old email address? How do I ensure that she will get emails sent to the old address? I have tried using an alias but that appears to work only within the domain.
make sure the the e-mail tab on your account has both e-mail address on it.
New Name
jane.doe@company.com (default)
Old Name
jane.carr@company.com
have both will mean she will get e-mails sent to both address. Making the New address the defualt one means that this is the address she will send new mail as.
