Hi Everyone,

Does anybody know how to remove all usernames and passwords from an access database?

I had 5 databases on my machine, I added two users (admin and myself) to one of the databases and it now asks me to enter a username and password no matter what database I open.

I am worried that if I remove all users, I will lock myself out of all the databases.

Many thanks in advance,

Daniel

Access uses a workgroup administrator utility that references a system.mdw file, which is used to manage security. By default, Access is always logged in as the Admin user with no password, this is why you've never noticed it before. But once you set the Admin password, you'll be prompted to enter it next time you start Access. From there, you can also log in as any other user you've added to the system.mdw file.

It's important to understand that this system.mdw file is independent of all your Access databases. If your workgroup administrator is pointing to a system.mdw file with an admin password, then it will prompt you for login, no matter which database file you're opening. To get rid of it, point your workgroup administrator to a clean system.mdw file, or remove the Admin password. That should do the trick.

You might want to read through a chapter on Access security before starting to add users and groups because you can most certainly lock yourself out by accident if not careful. But in general, you set permissions on database files, and you create users and groups in a global security file. This, for example, lets you setup a single username or group with permissions on more than one .mdb file.

Hope this helps,

Mike
