This system only has one user ( in normal mode) and now, when it gets to the Welcome screen it shows the Useer's Logon icon but then , when clicked, starts for a few seconds then says "Saving settings" then drops back to the same User logon screen..
Does it in Safe mode for both the User and Admin..

Any ideas??

Thanks

Is the machhine on the domain? Check whether the profile is still on the machine. Does user have roaming profile?

its your master boot record, use system drive utility to fix. seems like a pretty common problem. i only fixed one of these before, fixmbr command on xp cd didnt do the trick, it was the hard drive utility that worked for me

Thanks.. it certainly seems like Malware...
Bcaster.. I cant use the Recovery console as I dont know the Admin password... I think I originally installed this after a previous mishap, its XP Pro.. but I never get asked for an Admin password that I can recall..
Maybe, as this drive is running FAT32 and I can boot from a floppy and read the C: drive from Dos.. can I use that
COPY USERNIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE from the command line?? I can't see why not but I'm asking just in case..
I wish they had not called it MALware..

Thanks..Am off to do that now.. sorry about not seeing it.. too little time.. ( weak excuse.. but..)
And I've since realised why I cant use the dos prompt.. the WSAUPDATER.EXE has 10 chars in the filename..

Anyway..

This particular malware rates in my top ten list.
It is quite common, and it is a genuine p.i.a. to remove.

My regrets,

Well, I've done all that.. sort of... but am stuck from lack of knowledge..

In a nutshell, what IS slipstreaming?? Others all seem to know but I haven't heard of it before today.. Maybe I'll know when I run it..
Fortunately the owners PC is running Pro & I had done SP2 on it last visit..so I'm creating the CD right now..
Will I need the Product Key during the operation??

Thanks

I've run the slipstreamed disc but it seems to be the same as a the OEM XP PRO SP2 original disk that I already have..
If I select the recovery console then I just get stuck at the Admin password..
I can't understand how this disc is going to allow me to do that file copy step you first outlined.. like I said, if the new file was 8 or less chars it would be easy.. the other stages I read all appear to require being in Windows to perform the tasks..
I'm stuck..
The best I can figure is that a created slipstream disc just contains the regular creation files including all updates.. am I wrong??
