Some of my users have corrupt emails in their inboxes which are causing all backups (both individual mailbox and the full store, whether using Backup Exec or NTBackup) to fail.

The users cannot delete these emails - they get a consistent "can't open this item" error. I've isinteg'ed the store with no luck.

Help!!!!

Log onto their email from outlook on the exchange server and delete it from there. Remember to delete from delted items or back up will give you the failed message again.

If you retain deleted items it may still be around though.

I usually exmerge out the users mailbox, delete and recreate the mailbox then exmerge back in. But if you do it this way you will lose single instance storage.

If you are getting 1018's in the event log make sure to test you system for hardware and software errors that may be causing them first.

I recently had this with Ex5.5, spent weeks trying to find the problem, I eventually caved and built a new Ex2k box.

No joy here I'm afraid, tried using Outlook on the server with "Unknown Error" as the result, tried it under OWA without any luck. I don't wanna have to junk the user's mailbox, I'd prefer a non-destructive solution here. Guess I'm looking at an evening of the joys of eseutil /p...

We ran into a similar situation. We were able to delete it from web access email.

I have had the exact problem but I'm sorry I can't remember the exact fix. All I know is that it didn't involve doing anything major. Try deleting the users profile from outlook on their machine and then recreating it. Or clear the forms cache.

Or maybe try moving the mail without opening it, to deleted items then emptying deleted items on exit.

If I can remember what I did I'll let you know.

What fail message does the back up say?

Use OWA to delete the message from the folder and deleted items.
