Hmmm.... Who's forcing who? Folks are not switching to InDesign simply because Quark costs too much. Quark does not have the feature set for a layout application in the 21st century. I feel 'forced' that I need to maintain an old computer to handle legacy Quark 4 documents. All our new documents are created in InDesign.
If you are truly concerned about maintaining support for a 1996 DTP program, consider buying a used G4 that can boot directly into OS9. Not all G4s can boot into OS9. A survey of this forum will show that running Quark 4 in Classic mode is not error-free.
