Hello, first off i'm new so apologies if this thread is not in the most appropriate forum.

My problem comes about as we've changed ISPs, we were with NTL (a cable company) and had a linksys wireless router ( - if thats any help!?), I managed to setup a wireless network easily as the old modem had an ethernet port. However our new provider (Bulldog) provided a standard USB modem, it doesnt have any ports so i'm wondering if it is possible to use the PC as in affect a modem? the PC does have a network card, but i'm just unsure how to setup the TCP/IP connetions, I would think that I need to give the card a static IP then type the DNS servers that my real modem uses, then finally just connect the PC to the router and setup the IP again as the gateway?.

I know it would be easier just to pay for another router and the PC would always have to be on (which it is anyway!), but i'm more interested in learning if this is possible, rather than chuck money at the situation!

Cheers

Mike

Mike1980,

Do you still have the Linksys equipment?

Is the Bulldog system a DSL provider?

Can I assume that this PC is running XP as you are posting here? Is it Home or Pro?

What you want to do is set this PC up as a "Gateway" and all other clients will access the Internet through it.

The required settings:
IP Address Set to Obtain automatically or to a static address within the same subnet as your broadband/dsl modem. If set as static you will have to exclude this address in the Linksys configruation. I suggest you obtain automatically.
SubNetMask 255.255.255.0 (if set to static)
Gateway Same IP as your broadband/dsl modem

All this can be setup using the network wizard and selecting other computers access the internet through this computer or whatever the exact phraseology is.

You will connect this PC's NIC to the router and leave the modem set up as it is. Note as most routers have a firewall and normally sit between the modem and the clients all PC's are firewalled. If you cannot set this up like this our gateway PC will ahve a bit more exposure.

Scratch all the above, get a USB to Ethernet adapter(see Link) and change the attachment from your PC to the router. Then either access the router via wire or wireless.

USB to Ethernet adapter

Hope this Helps

What you want is to Share an Internet Connection through the PC that has the USB modem attatched.

1. Setup the modem on the machine as per the instructions, once the machine is able to connect and browse the internet move to next point.

2. Right click the internet connection and select Properties and then Advanced, the tick the Allow other users from the network to connect through this computers internet connection.

3. Once that is done, that computer will become a DHCP servwer, and will start giving out addresses. Go into each Pc, and change the gateway to the IP of the sharing computer.

You should then be able to connect through that PC.
