I have a user who has a Mustek Scanner and a Canon Digital IXUS camers - Only one or the other will work ie: if the scanner is plugged in the camera won't work or if the camera is plugged in first the scanner won't work ?????
XP uses basically the same driver for both of these devices and I have found that this driver acts sortof like a PCMCIA port does in that it doesn't "see" the device until the device sends a "wakeup" call. My camera and scanner can both stay connected but I have to cycle power to one or both of the devices to "wake up" the driver. If my devices are not active for a time but were once "connected" they both can be "disconnected" or dropped from connected status and they disappear as available devices. I can see both devices at once IF I have cycled power or cycle online status (on my camera I have an "upload" button that seems to wake up the driver) on both devices. Wake up doesn't happen by an application requesting use because the device is not "known" to the OS. You have to do something at the device end to send a "wake up" call.
Anyway, I hope you get the idea here. Plug both in but thru some method make the driver "see" them and if you lose one or both go through the procees again.
I consider this a bug and have sent an email to MS through the support system but I'm not holding my breath for a fix.B-(
Hope this helps as a workaround for you.
You may get better functionallity by uninstalling the MS drivers and using XP drivers from the manufacturers of your devices. I'm not sure though because they could still use some of the MS USB/Twain dirver functionality where I think this behavior is coming from. The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.
