Hi

Whenever I connect a USB device, the PC will either reboot or reboot and screw up. If it screws up the only way to recover is to boot to safe mode, delete ALL usb drivers and start again.

Running Windows XP SR1

The system will start to recognise the device before rebooting. Tried installing drivers that come with devices etc but nothing seems to work. Is there a way to 'reset' windows XP drivers? apart from a complete wipe & reinstall I don't know where to turn??

Many thanks

P

The normal way to "reset" the drivers is to use Device Manager and "Uninstall" the root USB hub devices. On reboot the New Hardware Wizard will run and re-install them.

Some things to consider:

1. Update the drivers:
2.
3.

This site is a good one for all things USB.

If the above patches don't help you can try the USB TroubleShooter from Help and Support, accessed by typing "
List of troubleshooters" in the box.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Is there any update available for your Bios or drivers for your motherboard?

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
