about a year ago, i mistakenly installed the wrong printer drivers (Spanish!) for a new color printer...so, I tried un-installing/re-installing drivers all to no avail---still was showing Spanish language drivers (I know I should have just left it alone, but...) I had a friend who gave me a utility that would 'fix' this issue--turned out it wiped out everything pertaining to the USB ports and they no longer operate correctly.
For example, it'll recognize and work properly when using a hub (scanner works fine)but, when I try to install the main printer (HP laser jet)directly to cpu it will not recognize it. i have to connect it to our daughter's cpu and print from there...kind of a pain.
anybody have any ideas/tips??

Which O/S does the system use?

XP...sorry. Dell Dimension 3000 cpu.

Press and hold the F8 key during startup, select "Last known good configuration" from the startup menu using the arrow keys, and press the Enter key.

Learn Spanish.

Seriously, get into BIOS (F2 or Del key during boot) and use the arrow keys to navigate until you see "load system default settings" or "load optimized settings", press Enter, back out & save and see if that works.

Or, look here: thread602-1313722 for another solution to USB woes.

Is it a USB printer by design, or parallel with parallel to USB adapter. If the latter, you need to install the driver for the adapter (probably)

Are you connecting the printer, then trying to install the driver or vice versa? Some USB printers require the drivers to be installed first, then reboot, then connect the printer.

Right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, then the Hardware tab.

Click on the Device Manager button.

Click on "View", and "Show hidden devices".

Under your USB Controllers section, uninstall everything below that expansion.

Unplug all USB devices.
Reboot, it will re-detect your USB hubs and ports.
Plug in your USB devices again, one at a time, giving it time to detect the hardware. This *should* solve your printer issue.
