Sunday I was in my local computer store (in Japan) and I noticed someone buying an IO/DATA 256MB USB ram module. I've never seen anything like that before and was curious if anyone knows anything about it or has any comments on it's usefulness!! I don't think it was a RAM disk - just memory - but I suppose I could be mistaken as I don't read Japanese!

Yes, those little storage devices are useful primarily because they're portable. They're basically identical to a hard drive, just much smaller and can be quite expensive. Look for USB 2.0 ones if you decide to get one that's over 128MB.

Maybe - but that is a RAM disk isn't it? I have a feeling that what I saw was more like an expanded mem module - but like I say, I'm not completely sure - hence my question.

I shouldn't say "identical" to a hard drive physically, just functionality-wise. Most use some type of Flash memory that can transfer as fast as 1MB/sec in some cases.
