I am running windows xp pro on a laptop. The laptop doesn't have a serial port so I am using a Targus PA088 USB to serial converter to get a serial port. The serial port is taking in data from a Trimble SV8+ GPS module in NMEA format at 2400 8 N 1. The problem I am having is that upon reboot the laptop will not detect the USB to serial converter and give it a COM number but instead detects a HID compliant mouse. I have added the /noserialmouse to the boot.ini file but to no avail. The laptop reboots with HID compliant mouse and mouse the cursor all over the page. I can disable the device in hardware manager which fixes the mouse problem but it still won't detect my converter as a converter after a reboot. Is it possible to load the USB to serial converter and then have the device manager remember that setting and not look for new USB devices? Or perhaps it is possible to have windows automatically load the correct driver file at startup somehow? Ideally I would like the converter to act as a permanent device, just like a real serial port would be. So if I could get the driver information to remain constant like what would happen with any other device in hardware manager that would probably solve the problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks =-)
