I have a p4p800s B from Asus, says USB 2.0 available on all ports. I have enabled in BIOS and installed Win XP service pack 1a on win XP proffessional. but still does not recognize the USB as USB2.0, wat is the problem??

In device manager USB2 is recognised as "standard enhanced PCI to USB Host controller" On the majority of chipset configurations there is no mention of USB2, this is normal.
I must admit that this through me as well but after some past postings and research, this was the conclusion.

thnks paparazi,
I did a clean install of windows xp pro and service pack 1a and now get "standard enhanced PCI to USB Host controller". Thnks for u allz help.
I have a completely different mobo with USB 2 but after a clean install mine also shows as a 'standard enhanced PCI to USB Host controller'. However once I install the motherboard drivers, either from the CD that came with it or updated ones from the manufacturer's web site, an additional item appears called 'USB 2.0 root hub'.
So on my motherboard at least, it doesn't recognise that it's USB 2 until I install the appropriate drivers. Before I do this the USB works but if I connect a USB 2 device I get a warning saying something like 'a USB 2 device has been attached to a non-USB 2 port and therefore won't function at full speed.'

That's why I was careful to say "On the majority of chipset configurations there is no mention of USB2" because as you point out, a few do mention USB2 but unfortunately most don't.
Notice* midsummas has installed XP with SP1a, so he is well up to date and covered as far as your link goes.
It is annoying and unclear to the uninformed, I'm sure Microsoft could easily write a patch to make it clearer.

The one and only difference between SP1 and SP1a is the Microsoft Virtual Machine. SP1a does not contain the above fix or any other fixes, MS just took out the VM only.
Sorry to be unclear, but after installing XP and Service pack 1a, my System management Bus controller had driver problems, so i downloaded the drivers for my chpset from intel and now it works. So u do actually have to install separate drivers other than the ones available in service pack 1a for XP.
USB is still a bit flakey as a fix-all interface. I would never trust it for networking. I see no need to have a keyboard with USB. PS2 Works, why fix it? I see no real reason to use USB for a keyboard. You can only press the keys so fast. When you use USB devices the more USB devices you add the slower your system will go. It takes overheat to manage all that.

ceh4702 - what you said, I second it... but in the case where a PS/2 Keyboard doesn't function anymore due to the fact that the connector is bad, etc. and the PC still works otherwise, then WHY NOT...
Im not talking bout using USB keyboards neways. I was talking bout my ext 20 gb HDD that requires USB 2,0 to run at full capacity, that is why I asked for this thread, not bcoz i wanna use a USB kB
midsummas - don't fret, ceh4702 was just pointing a few things out, that do make sense, but wasn't particular to your post... as it wasn't totally clear why you needed to have USB 2.0 working... as to the fact that USB keyboards work with USB 1.0 and 1.1 anyways... but am glad that my post helped (had the same prob once)...
