Hey Guys,

I have made Windows 2000 Server boot disks for installation on a brand new 40GB hard drive. I booted with the first disk and followed all the steps, letting the installation format the new drive. When prompted to reboot I did so, removing the installation disks from the floppy drive. Upon reboot, I get a disk read error and the new operating system cannot load.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed from here? I need to get this done today.

Thanks in advance,

hi greg, did you have a previous OS installation or an other harddrive installed on this system in question? You formatted to NTFS i suppose?
If you have an other PC, which often is not the case you can install the new 40 gb drive on that system and work on it from the system which works, (sometimes easier for me when troubleshooting hd)

probably not the answer u needed but you never know

Steve,

Thanks for your response. I had the same result with the previous hd that was in the machine. I assumed that it was just bad and bought another one, but now I think it is something hosed up with the formatting. For what it's worth, I flashed the bios to the latest version before doing this, but it still messed up.

I suppose I need to do a low-level format of the new hd at this point, but I'm not sure how to do it. Can you give me some advice on that?

Thanks,

yeah Ive actually used the maxtor utility and found it quite easy to work with...
what about the MBR? did you wipe it clean during the fdisk or at some point? someone once mentioned somnething like that...
