I posted this in the hardware forums, but thought it might be relevant here as well...

In the January issue of Maximum PC, they mention that Pioneer Electronics has issued a mandatory firmware update for the following recorders:
[ul]
[li]Pioneer DVR-7000 DVD recorder[/li]
[li]Pioneer PRV-9000 Professional DVD recorder[/li]
[li]Pioneer DVR-A03 computer drive[/li]
[li]Pioneer DVR-103 computer drive[/li]
[li]Pioneer DVR-A04 computer drive[/li]
[li]Pioneer DVR-104 computer drive[/li]
[/ul]
If you own any of these, then you'd better update ASAP. The reason is that using newer 4x media on a 2x drive could ruin both the media and the drive! That's right, I said DRIVE!!

For some reason, there is a bug in the firmware that causes the whole thing to crap out. According to the article I read, it's not recoverable either. Upgrading the firmware will not let you write at 4x, but it will of course prevent the crash from happening.

Go here to learn more and download the update (you'll probably need to click the "Pioneer & 3rd party" link):
