HI all.

very urgent problem here, ALL of the 2,000 odd stations on the network have to get an IP Address from the server each time they start. about 20 mins ago we got flodded with calls about not being able to log on to the domain, i tried many stations and yes its true. logged on at the server (NT server 4 PDC) and tried looking in dhcp admin, couldnt find the server so i looked in services and the DHCP Server service is set to automatic but is not started, so i tried starting it and the following erroe occured "could not start the microsoft dhcp server service on \\server1 error 2140 an internal windows NT server error occured. PLEASE couls someone help as soon as poss as entire network is down till this is fixed.

i looked at this page earler and was no help. i have got a number for microsoft in Uk but i doubt they will help. this servs the boss right for not paying for a support contract he said i pay you to support the servers why should i pay someone else aswell. i am going to shut down the system for tonight and go home im tired!, if you do think of anything else please do post it and i will check in about 6 hours (thats all the sleep ill get) and if all else fails ill backup the users files and rebuild it!.

thanks for your help tonight.

(getting sacked in the morning!!!) i wish!

the other one was no help either. i set up the server myself the slow way. no unatended things or anything standard installation.

yes i had loads. anyway i think i have sorted it now. i swapped the network card for another one, installed the drivers etc rebooted and all fine. i had to set up the dhcp settings again though because i removed it at one point. the problem now lies with the stations. none can pick up an ip address from the server. i have been traveling round all our offices today setting up the ip addressed manualy ready for monday morning. i would like to get dhcp working again though. all our stations are win2k pro and when i try setting it to obtain and ip address automaticly then in the command type ipconfig /renew it says it cant find the dhcp server. but specyfiying one which is in the same range as the server works fine!. the DHCP is set up as follows.

server Ip Address: 192.101.5.5

start address: 192.101.0.0
End Address: 192.101.225.225
Subnet mask: 225.225.0.0

any help would be greatley apprieciated.

TIA
