I have re-installed Windows 98 SE and continue to have my computer lock up when I maximize or minimize a window. Memory should not be a problem, as I have 128 meg and old DOS habits remain and I normally close all other progams.

I had this problem too, and to be honest never solved it. I ended up reinstalling, although that won't help you!

I did suspect the video card driver though. Have you checked that the correct one is installed?

Does this also happen in safe mode? If not then the video card driver becomes even more suspect, there may also be a resource conflict, if you can, have a look for conflicts in Device Manager.

Presumably you are using the same video card as before?

Try disabling 'animate windows, menues and lists'.Found in control panel/display/effects.These effects are only wise on faster computers.Just a thought......Andy.

I had the same problems that you are having, and what fixed mine was by going and buying me a new video driver card. Hopefully this information will help you some.

Thanks, guys. Bought new video card, froze three times since. There was one conflict in Device Manager under Sound cards, etc. It read "XMicrosoft Kernel System Renderer". I decided to remove it and see what happened. Anybody know what that message means or where where removing it will leave me?

i dont know.

but,

if it involves the kernel, id first try reinstalling windows, and then format and reinstall, and if u still have it..its hardware...

and likely still vid card or driver related as far as i know, is there a programmer/ms sycophant who knows ?

X-)

I think it has something to do with DirectX and controls the position of TV/Video pictures through a TV equipped video card. Not real certain tho':p
