upload files to suse Linux

BACKGROUND:
I have a CF process which allows users to upload files to my web server. Then view the files thru Internet Explorer. My process accepts .DOC,.XLS,.TXT,.PDF. It works great on windows server but my site is now moving to a suse linux server.

PROBLEM:
The upload process still works, but when I try to view the files via Internet Explorer I am seeing garbage for xls/doc files. I realize that xls/doc files are a Windows product, but shouldn't they still render correctly in Internet Explorer?
