I recently upgraded my mobo and processor from P3 750 and asus cuv4xc to asus p4v8x-x and p4 2.4a. Im using a PC 3200 ddr 250 mb. My problem is that im not content with the speed of my comp now. I cant even update my winxp pro sp1 to winxp sp2. I've read somewhere that i have to update bios because theres some issues with installing sp2 on a prescott processorsor. I was hoping that by upgrading i wont be having these problems. Im planning to upgrade to a new board and processor again from my existing mobo and processor now to asus p4p800s se and p4 2.8c . Am i doing the right thing. Should i just upgrade the mobo or just the processor. I need advice on what to upgrade. Im also adding another 256 mb of memory. I need advice as soon as possible. Thanks

What you want to upgrade to (in terms of processor and mb) depends on what you're going to do with the computer system. If you're doing a lot of 3D computer gaming, spend that money on an AMD Athlon64-type processor with matching motherboard (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI...). If you're doing media creation, then the newer P4s are better (in either case make sure you have a decent video card...32MB or more on an Nvidia or ATI board). If you're just doing email, web surfing, etc. then go with the cheaper way (most likely AMD). No matter what, adding that extra 256MB of ram is a good thing.

what i want to decide is wether i change the motherboard or not. I have 2 motherboards right now which im having a hard time deciding what to use. ASus p40800s se or asus p4v8x-x. I already bought a P4 2.8c processor and kingston 512 mb pc3200.

I'm not sure but I think you're talking about the Asus P4P800S SE? I don't know very much about either board you're talking about but looking at the specs on ASUS's website I'd say the P4P800S SE is the better board, it has 800Mhz front side bus while the P4v8x-x uses only 533Mhz (everything else is a wash). This means faster throughput and better overall system performance, especially since the P4 2.8C uses 800Mhz (you wouldn't want to scale it down to 533 Mhz, if it even works at all on the P4v8-x).

I'm assuming that the boards and processor still use the 478 socket of course =)

Thanks. I appreciate your opinion

Lara, what are you using this computer for? The specs should be more than enough for most computer users. Is it running slow? Have you ran Adaware or Spybot on it to see if you have a lot of junk running? Do you have a lot of programs running on the computer during normal usage? You should not have a problem with a P4 2.4 unless you are perhaps a hard core gamer.

I want to change the processor coz of the noise and the heat.
