Upgrading XP Home to XP Professional 1

I am currently running Windows XP Home OEM which came with my PC. I also have Windows XP Professional and would like to install this over the top of my XP Home version.

My question is would I be able to do this and still have all my files, all my configured hardware as I do at present, all service packs and windows updates or would I need to start from scratch. I would of course create backups before attempting anything!

Reason for doing this is because I want to setup the machine to be controlled by RDP. As far as I am aware I cannot on Windows Home setup the machine to be remote controlled by RDP. I have tried to do this and failed quite badly!

I can of course control another machine using RDP but I cannot access the XP Home machine, unless anyone knows otherwise? I have VNC setup but would really like to run a terminal session, RDP so I could control the machine from work etc. Netmeeting is very much hit and miss.

I also want to take a look at a few other supported features on XP Pro that are not on XP Home, such as IIS and security policies/accounts etc.

Thanks for any replies, much appreciated ;-)

So, in short, you are asking:
can anyone garantee that everything will still work as I want?

In short, no, there is no garantee.

It should be ok, but since there are no garantees in the IT world, there is a nifty tools called .. BACKUP.

307229 - Icons, Favorites, E-Mail Messages, and Customization Is Missing After Upgrade to Windows

"a computer preinstalled with an OEM version of XP Home might not upgrade using a retail version of XP Pro upgrade. This is especially true of laptop computers that have a customized OEM version of XP Home installed. In that case, only a clean install will work. Laptop computers require specialized hardware drivers not found in the conventional "retail, upgrade" version of Windows XP. It would have been best if you had initially called HP support and ordered HP's version of Windows XP Pro for your specific HP computer." - Carry FISH
