Is their another way to upgrade to Windows 98 from windows 95 other than using the 98 upgrade cd. I don't want to reformat the harddrive and repartition anything, I want to keep whats already on the system and upgrade to 98. If there's another way around this let me know, if not I'll just have to purchase the windows 98 upgrade cd. Thanks all!

if you have the full cd you need to rename C:\windows\win.com to avoid the"your computer already has an operating system which can not be upgraded..etc.". The computer will NOT boot to Windows after you've done this,
so you need either a Win98 start disk which will allow you to access your cdrom, OR copy all the files in the cdrom:\win98 directory to a folder on your hd and run setup from there.

If there is some problem (cd not recognised by the start disk setup, or whatever) you can always reverse it using any boot disk and type REN C:\WINDOWS\WIN.CO* C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM,so rename it to something you can remember.

Both above are correct but on some occasions i have had to drop to dos for this to work
also make sure you have no virus scanners or memory managers running
Also alot of win98 drivers are different than win 98 so check for latest downloads hope this helps

If you've got all your hardware woring in 95, then it will continue to work in 98 by doing the upgrade. The install will look in the c:\windows\inf and c:\windows\system folders for existing .inf and .dll files, and use them accordingly (usually correctly).
98 has far more drivers than 95 included as well.
The problem with restarting in DOS, is one usually loses CD-ROM support, and thus makes doing the upgrade difficult, unless the user has copied the contents of the CD to his hard drive first. Cheers,

I have 12 virtually identical workstations running Win95 OSR2 that I am trying to upgrade to Win98SE. I have the Win98SE Upgrade CD. Three of the machine upgraded (vs. new install) just fine after first shutting down all background processes and programs. The other 4 I tried come up with an error stating something like "Your current operating system's SETUP.DLL and NETIxx.DLL files are currently in use. Please shut down all programs and try again" I shut down everything except EXPLORER (and even experimented shuting down SYSTRAY)but I keep getting the error on only some of the machines. Any ideas on how to overcome this error condition? Thanks!

Disconnect them from the LAN/WAN and remove any NIC's from them. Do the upgrade, then reinstall the NIC's and the LAN/WAN settings. Windows can sometimes give this error if any network components are installed, even if they're not in use, especially on DHCP networks... Cheers,
