We are about to upgrade to Office 2000 from 97, all the programs but Access. I just tried the install process using the Custom choice, but it didn't allow me to select which components to install--it just said to choose a different installation directory if you did not want to remove earlier versions--I don't want two copies of Access (97 and 2000) on my system--do I have to then go back and remove Access 2000? Am I missing something? Is it ok to continue using Access 97 while running Office 2000?

Thanks!

You can use the Custom Installation Wizard included with the Office 2000 Resource Kit. This will allow you to create a .MST file. An MST file contains all the setup information you would normaly set in the standard setup. You can also tell it to remove only certain parts of previous Office installs. This way you can set up the MST so it doesn't install Access 2000 and leaves Access 97 alone.

Once you have a .MST file created you can run the office setup with this command line

setup.exe TRANSFORMS=&quot;<PATH>/file.mst&quot; /qn+

The TRANSFORMS option tells the Office setup where to find your .MST file. The /qn+ switch tells the office setup to run with no user interaction.

More information on CIW, .MST and .OPS files can be found in Microsoft Technet / MS Office 2000 Notes from the Field / Chapter 4 & 5.

I would suggest reading before you attempt this because there is a bit more which is involved. If you don't have TechNet+, get it, it's WELL worth the $450 a year. It's saved me on many occations. [sig][/sig]

I recently did quite the opposite, whereby I was installing Access 2000 from Office 2000 where I already had the full Office 97 installed (Access 97 included). I changed the installation path for the install using the custom settings and then installed just Access2000, leaving the rest of Office 97 alone.

It did ask me whether to upgrade the existing version of Office, to which I selected Do Not Upgrade Existing Versions.

I now have Access 2000 and Office 97 working side by side (Access 97 included).
