I'm buying a used computer that has Win98 first edition. Can I upgrade to win98 second edition free through the internet or will I have to buy the disk??

I am afraid you will have to buy it, any free upgrade on the Internet will be illegal.

Paul's right and truthfully I'd wait for Windows XP Home Edition.

If you don't want Bill and Co snooping around inside your PC I would try and find a (legal) copy of W98II. and forget about XP.

Yes, I'd go with the last suggestion. XP will undoubtedly require more resources than '98, i.e. more RAM, more HD space etc.

ROGER - GØAOZ.

Although I too am cautious about Microsoft's 'registration' process, if they do manage to create something useable based on the NT kernel, it has to be considered because of the stability (I think security is a whole different issue, however). There will no doubt be other issues with drivers etc., I'd be interested to know if anyone here has been running XP beta, and what they think.

If the computer already has the first win98 and I go to the Microsoft site and add all of the updates, would this bring it up to win98 SE??

Sopman, close but not quite. Sorry, I can't provide more details as to what it's missing.

I think the biggest difference is you can't download Internet Connection Sharing, which allows two computers to share a single connection to the Internet.

Just about everything else can be downloaded, I think.
