Ok, I know I'm trying to do allot at one time, but here it goes. We're currently running GP 7.0 Standard using Pervasive 2000i and I want to get to 8.0 using MSDE. At the moment, I’m attempting to setup a test environment to perform trial upgrades before actually upgrading our production environment.

For my test environment, I’ve got a Windows XP Pro with MSDE installed on it. It is merely for my testing of upgrades and no other users will be on it except for one person, so I’m assuming I don’t need Windows 2000 or 2003 (if anybody knows for sure, please let me know because I’m wasting my time if it’s required).

I have meticulously followed the steps from article #878447 (Moving Dynamics Data Files From One Server To Another – New Install Method) in the Customer Source Knowledge Base with the hopes of duplicating our productions environment … with absolutely no success what so ever. I’ve also read and attempted the instructions listed in article #865254 (Moving Dynamics Data From One Server To Another Location Translation Method)…. dead end. After the install I keep getting forced into the Dynamics Utilities application asking for translation locations … but can’t enter anything in any field, which results in an absolute dead end.

For now, I’ll stop here hoping just to get my test server running. This is a no frills, no 3rd party module, no special modifications, and no FRx or Crystal system. Straight basic GP 7.0 Standard system. I’m sure once I get that going, I’ll have more questions upgrading to 7.5 & MSDE. But I would welcome any additional information, tips and/or tricks, if anybody has them.

Okay, I prefer the new install method.

Location Translation errors can be a lot of things. From what I remember though, the most predominate problem was damaged files. Look at the properties of the SY05100.btr file (In the root server folder) and the SY01700 files (In the System folder). If the Modified date is the date you were doing stuff, the file was damaged. You then need to copy the file of the CD and changed the properties to UNcheck Read Only. If there is a service pack installed (and there should be) you need the SY05100 file from the service pack.

stef,

Based on what I see of these files, they have the original modification date but the sizes are different. Neither had the Read Only option checked.

Can I do a straight copy of those files from the CD? On the CD, they're list as .OUT files not .BTR files.

From asking the users here, there has been no upgrades to the 7.0 system. It's the original system that was installed.

Sometimes when you're doing a new install, move, or update of sort those files get damaged. .Out is something else. The files are located in the System folder on the CD.

The Read Only option is only checked when you copy over from a CD.

If the modified date was changed, they should be okay but you can try replacing them anyway. If that doesn't work then it's one of the other problems.

When you get the blank Location Translation, if you click on the Locations button is there anything listed?

Oops, I meant if the modified date was NOT changed you should be okay.

How do yo edit posts here anyway?
