We will be upgrading Backup Exec for Windows 2000 from 8.5 to 9.0. I've been trying to find some issues that might come about as a result of the upgrade. This is for a long-distance client so we want to be as prepared as possible for the upgrade. Have there been any problems or issues resulting from the upgrade? Any opinions you'd like to share?

Don't friggin do it, go to 8.6. 9.0 is a mess. If you must, put it on non-production servers and test it. I suggest putting 8.5 on a test box then try the upgrade. Don't be a fool and rush out there to install this on your production servers. Test it first. Version x.0 of any software is not something you want to throw on your production machines. Trust me on this one.

i will be upgrading from 8.6 to 9.0 shortly --

there is no option 'not to do it'

Our servers were literally replaced by one big server -- it is a win 2000 server with exchange server on it

literally replaced three nt 4.0 servers -- one of which was pdc, one an exchange 5.5 server, one a file server

now all that is on one big server 2000

it came to us already having veritas 8.6 on it -- although it lacked the ofo and the exchange agent

so we essentially 'lost some functionality' - our old setup allowed us to do mailbox backups and restore email short of 'the whole shootin match'

so - we got 9.0 upgrade

i wish to know of any issues

but i can't hear 'just don't do it!'

gonna do it

i am merely the implementer of it

Here is a technote I had to use w/Veritas support help as well:

Fuubar is right. If there is any way you can avoid "upgrading" to 9.0 and stay at 8.6; I would do it. They worked most bugs/issues out of 8.6 rev3878 by now.

My suggestion otherwise would be for you to write down all your configurations in 8.5. Then contact Veritas to change your 9.0 serial # from an upgrade to fresh install serial # and then do a fresh install. Upgrades of any software never work as advertised. You will save yourself a lot of hassle.

Just purchase the OFO or other agents from Veritas that you require for 8.6.

What ever you do, do not work on a Production Server!

Always create an image.
