Upgrading an NT 4 domain with a ".dom" already in the name

I am in the process of upgrade testing for our corporate network. Currently, our primary NT 4 domain has the suffix .dom ie "mycompany.dom". When I try to upgrade to an Active Directory, and use the name "mycompany.dom", I get an error message stating that the domain name is already in use. Does anyone know of a way around this short of creating a seperate AD from scratch and moving everything there?

I assume you are doing this by installing W2K on a new server. What you need to do is install NT4.0 on the new server, and make it the PDC for the domain. Then after it is the PDC you can UPGRADE it to W2K and run it in mixed mode as a PDC emulator.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for taking time to reply, but that is what i have done. Let me explain futher and maybe someone can clue me in because I am at a lose.

I have a test domain, called "domain.com". It is a NT 4 domain with a an NT PDC, NT BDC w/Exchange 5.5, two Win2K member servers and 2 Win2K Pro clients. This rougly mirrors our corporate network (although smaller obviously)

I am testing an AD upgrade, so I upgrade the PDC to Win2K, run DCPROMO and create a new forest. It asks for the domain name: I try to use "domian.com" because i want to upgrade the existing domain. However, since the ".com" is part of the name already, AD will not accept it, stating that "domain.com" is already in use. Normally, you would add, ".com" or ".local" to the domain name. But since a ".com" is already there, I run into this problem.

Has anyone ever run into this before? I am not able to create a new AD and migrate. Upgrading the existing domain is the only option.

If you are upgrading the PDC you have to continue to use the same domain space that is currently used in your DNS. If you are upgrading your domain it should automatically use the suffix that is present... Is this perhaps the problem you are having... Trying to change the suffix to something else?
