I need to save xl2000 worksheet to .DBF and then append to another ".dbf" file. A client of mine [on travel] is sending me records in xl2000.

Have found that CLIPPER cannot read the file several attempts have resulted in two distinct problems:

[1] Some sort of ".DBT" corruption occurs. How's that, when I simply selected "save as " to ".DBF (III)" format??

[2] Cannot append to an existing ".dbf" file. (Records did not translate correctly ... only got one item with "N1" in the saved file.)

[3] After the save, closing the xl window, the ".DBF" could not be opened 'cause it was stuck in "shared mode." I had to reboot the PC to release that flag.

Tried everything I could think of ... even by linking with ACCESS2000 and cut/paste. The only way I could do it was to go backwards and use ACCESS97, link to the target ".dbf", import the worksheet "saved as" xl95/97, and then cut/paste.

Compatibility of xl2000 appears to be a very serious problem for simple transfers of records.

Well, there are several things to take into account.

1) How are you saving this data? Excell Offers several seperate versions of DBase formats to save in. Save in dBase3 Format.

2) You can save it as a CSV (Comma delimited) file then use DBU to read in the data (Assuming that the fields are the same.

Give me some more information on how it is being saved right now and I will post back. Richard L. Hankins Jr.

Richard,

I am using the "File/Save As ..." function, saving as "dBASE III" .... which, for some reason, places unknown characters in the resulting file or it is corrupted.

Sandy, I am going to do some testing with xl2000 and see what I can get it to do.... I will be posting back very soon....

Alright, here is how you have to do it in order to keep all of the data clean and good. When you modify your data or what-not save it as CSV (MS-DOS). Then use DBU to append it to the file. That is the only way to do it after office 97.. unless you have MS-Access.... It still works with DBF files very nicely! Well I hope this has been a little bit of help. I know it is not the idea way to do this, but It will work.

Richard,

I genuinely appreciate your help with my recent "bumps in the road."

This technique will at least keep me going during this transition.

Thanks again,
Sandy
