A friend of mine has win95 and is thinking about upgrading. Does anyone have any suggestions?

why is he thinking about upgrading? Anything he upgrades to will be bigger and slower and will cause him to want to upgrade hardware.
If he is having problems or application issues then I could see an upgrade. Ed Fair

She's just wondering if she should. I'll see if she'll write in and explain. What hardware would have to be upgraded?

Depends on what version she is running and what she would move to. Maybe hard drive, maybe memory. And with memory upgrade, might be cheaper to replace M/B , processor, and memory. Previous memory is selling at $3 /meg, current at about $.16 /meg. At 128 mb the pricing curve leans to new style. Ed Fair

I am the person who is thinking about upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 98, ME or XP on my 200 series pentium. What prompted me to consider upgrading was not being able to install the latest Virus Protection program because it was not compatible with Windows 95.

It seems the options are a) stay with trusty Windows 95 but be restricted in other software updates (virus protection, internet explorer) or b) upgrade HARDWARE in order to install Windows 98, ME or XP, and then other program updates.

If I go with option a, how long can I last without getting completely outdated?

My opinion for what it's worth is to upgrade to Win98se but no further, as I see no benefit in doing so. 98 gives me all the functionality I require, whereas 95 as you state, is a little restricting. In any case, XP possibly won't run on your 200 - if it does, it'll do so badly.
I say stick to an OS more compatible with your system - if you can perform the tasks you need to on you comp. then keep it just as it is. One of my (many) dislikes is upgrading for the sake of it. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

If your computer currently does all you need it to, and all you will need it to in the immediate future, then there is no real reason to upgrade the hardware (assuming that the AV software limitations do not compromise your security). I agree that Win 98se is the furthest you should go, however if you do decide to upgrade, things like memory, a fast hard disk and a good graphics card come before cutting edge raw processor power.

Before you upgrade your hard disk etc. you need to find out what your BIOS will support. If the BIOS won't support a particular upgrade, you may have to Flash it to upgrade it. Flashing the BIOS is a serious step. If there is a flash available and you want to try it. Ther's also the Motherboard to consider. What will it support? If you get a new processor, it may not be suppported.

If you only have 32MB RAM in your computer, and many 95 machines have that, you will really need more.

It really depends on your Hardware in the end.

You have to define your own comfort level. Lots of people are still running w3.1 and are perfectly satisfied. There are lots of computers still running DOS, and you know how out of date that is.
The latest and greatest virus protection you can get today probably won't be the virus protection you'll use tomorrow, so get one that will run with what you have and has some hope for running with what you'll be using tomorrow. There are lots of packages available. Look to the virus FAQ and follow the chain to the list. Ed Fair

I would upgrade to Win98se.
Win ME is a piece of sh**
Win Xp to soon to tell.

Just my 2 cents

But from what I've read so far, XP is a shining example of 'bloatware'. Many of its 'improvements' are merely rather poor imitations or basic versions of existing third party applications included under license. For a decent firewall, CD burning software etc., you'll still need to install other programs making XP in essence rather unneccessary. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Thanks to all for your wise input and advice. Obviously I won't rush to "upgrade" to Windows 2000, ME or XP.

This has been my first time visiting this site, hence my first technical question. Because I'm so impressed with your expertise, it certainly won't be my last question to the forum.

Many thanks . . .

I always tell my friends not to bother with major upgrades of hardware and O/S, by the time all the bits have been purchased (unless you can get them very cheap), one might as well have purchased a new complete machine. It's less work, all the bits "should" be compatible (one hopes), you get a better monitor and it's got at least a years warranty. (usually 3 years now).

Run an old machine until it is totally useless for your purposes or can not be repaired and then replace it.
