What will be the best practice for introducing 2003 server in our domain.
We are running 2000 with some NT servers incl Exch 5.5 in mixed mode. We have one GC and one DC.
Will it be best just to upgrade the excisting 2000 GC server or must we install separate new server and do domain/forest prep and transfer FSMO roles to new 2003 server.

i have received the following advice:

All you need is to setup additional domain controller in the same forest, after configuring the new windows server 2003 domain controller make sure it is replicating in the "AD Site and Services" so that it can see all the DC. Transfer all FSMO role (SCHEMA, PDC EMULATOR, etc...) to the new Windows Server 2003 DC, make it a Global Catalog. Demote the Windows 2000 server (make sure that all FSMO roles in the Windows 2000 server are tansferred before demoting the dc). That's all...

What happens to AD in the interim when you run both 2000 GC and 2003DC.What about running domain prep and forest prep before making 2003 a DC?

You'll also need to transfer any network services that are running on the current DC, including DHCP and DNS.

You should run forestprep and domainprep (domain not Exchange) if you are going to upgrade the domain from Windows 2000 Mixed/Native to 2003. You aren't going to need to do it in this case.

Do you have any plans to upgrade Exchange?

ok i have added the 2003 DC without problems.
My 2000 GC is running DNS, DHCP and WINS and all FSMO roles.
Wouldn't it be better to just upgrade the excisting 2000 GC to 2003, instead of doing a fresh install on a different box and re configure/transfer everything?
