Upgrade issues - PIII 866 to PIII 1000Mhz - works with old processor..

Hi there,

I bought a new processor for my Aopen AX33 motherboard (Socket 370 ZIF,PC133, PIII 1000Mhz supposed to work with my motherboard). I was upgrading from a 866Mhz PIII to a 1000Mhz PIII SL52R. When I installed the new 1000 Mhz cpu, the system will not boot AT ALL. The monitor will not synch to show the BIOS load or anything. I put the 866Mhz PIII back in, and everything worked fine again.

There is no OS yet loaded, I just wanted to see the system detect the processor (automatic with the AX33) and start the BIOS, but no dice.

I think I may have received a bad processor. Do you agree?

Is there anything else that I should check?

What is the FSB of the mobo? (should be 133) Did you reset the BIOS jumper? Do you have the manual for the mobo?

Do you have the most recent BIOS for this board? Perhaps that is the issue. If you're not sure, check your current version using your 866 CPU, and compare with the latest version off of the Aopen drivers site. If you do not have the latest version, I'd try flashing and then try the new CPU again. If it still doesn't work, could be a dead CPU.

The FSB of the mobo is 133. From what I got from the manual(available online) it is not necessary to reset the jumper unless you are overclocking(I'm not) - there is an AUTO setting, and that's where it is set. Just for kicks, I did set the jumper to 133-150, and thing were no better.

I checked, and the BIOS is R1.07 - the second newest BIOS available. It seems that there is one newer bios for the board, R1.09 which says that it adds frequency display for PIII cpu's over 1000Mhz, but it doesn't say anything about compatability. It also says that it adds support for Intel CPU ratio up to 12.0X and VIA C3 CPU ratio up to 13.0. What is my CPU ratio with 1000 MHZ CPU and 133 Mhz FSB? I thought that it was 7.5.

As I receive the OS software tomorrow, I'll have to do the install then and download the new BIOS. Is this fairly easy to do (never did a BIOS upgrade)?

Is R1.07 the most up to date BIOS? The date is more recent, but the version number is not.

A bit confusing, at least to me!

I said to reset the BIOS jumper, not the FSB speed jumper. Did you try the BIOS jumper?

Hi there,

1.) is the 1ghz P III a coppermine or a Tualatin core? if it is a Tualatin, then most likely you are out of luck and your board does not support it...

2.) after changing processors, one should reset the CMOS/BIOS, as some boards do not like a change in processors without it...

3.) if the above don't help any, than your guess may be correct, and your 1ghz P III is possibly gone... have someone else test it or test it yourself with another board (they should run around 20 bucks or so)...

I'll bet almost anything the PCU is fine.

I aggree that if your new processor is a Tualatin you will be out of luck unless the new BIOS has support for it.

The last test it to properly flash the new BIOS (I'd do this before loading the OS, to save time/effort if it doesn't work out).

After new BIOS is loaded and working well shut her down and swap CPUs again, reset/clear the CMOS/BIOS and see what happens.

Have you been to AOpens site to see what CPU's the board supports?

There are two versions of the socket PIII - Coppermine which uses FC-PGA and Tualatin which uses FC-PGA2. Motherboards support one or the other, not both that I'm aware of.

I believe the PIII 1GHz was the only speed that came in both flavors. Make sure you have the right one. Likely your board supports Coppermine since it was running an 866MHz CPU before.
