I have seen 2 articles on upgrading your old w2k DC (which has the FSMO roles) hardware with new hardware, but niether address the issue if we need to keep the new hardware the same name as the old. Aside from doing a complete restore from tape backup, whcih doesn't work 95% of the time, is there any way to accomplish this? Will AD freak out with the different ID's and the same name without perfroming some task first? I know this happens to us with our workstations quite frequently.

Any help appreciated.

I have successfully done this by following this directions:

First, during the entire process, leave client workstations off. Assuming your current server is named Chocolate (this is the name you want to keep), install your new server as a backup controller named Milk. Copy/move all your data to Milk, make shares to match Chocolate, etc.

Once you have basically mirrored the setup, rename Chocolate to Milkshake. Reboot and update any databases like WINS/DNS. Upgrade Milk to PDC, rename to Chocolate. Check WINS/DNS, although it should have updated itself.

Your workstations will never know that Chocolate is new. Keep Milkshake if you want, or pull the plug.

Enjoy. =)

Great! I appreciate the help - this will be a lifesaver!
